He Joined the Sumitomo Bank, Ltd in 1982. From 2012 to 2014, he held the post of Managing Director and CEO of the Americas Division of SMBC, and then was promoted to Senior Managing Director, Member of the Management Committee, and took the position of Co-Head of the International Banking Unit. In 2017, he was appointed as President and CEO of SMBC. He assumed the chairmanship of the Japanese Bankers Association (JBA) in 2019, and he was reappointed in July 2021.
