Born in 1979, he graduated summa cum laude from the University of Tokyo's Department of Economics in 2003 and received his Ph.D from Harvard University's Department of Economics in 2008. Postdoctoral Fellow at Yale University, Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at Stanford University before becoming Professor at Stanford in 2019; returned to Japan in 2020 after 17 years with an offer from the University of Tokyo; Professor at the Graduate School of Economics, University of Tokyo, and Director of the Center for Market Design (UTMD), University of Tokyo from September 2020.
